Forty Years Young

The originators of ‘Oz Blues’, Chain, have reached a milestone in 2009 as they celebrate 40 years since first forming in 1968.

The originators of ‘Oz Blues’, Chain, have reached a milestone in 2009 as they celebrate 40 years since first forming in 1968.

They are still the only blues band in the world to have a number one on Australian charts (Black’n’Blue) as well as a number two (Judgement).

Together with singer Matt Taylor another number one (I Remember When I Was Young) & the double gold album ‘Toward The Blues’ ensured them a place in rock history.

With ‘Chain Awards’ honouring their achievements at the Australian Blues Festival (Goulburn) & as the first act listed in the new blues section of Screensound (National Archives) the accolades still continue.

Founder member/ guitarist Phil Manning & singer/harmonica player Matt Taylor each have highly successful careers as solo performers, and are regarded as among the finest exponents of their respective instruments this country has produced.

Drummer Barry Harvey’s spectacular playing amazes audiences everywhere & together with the powerful drive of bassist Dirk Dubois, form the engine that motors the band through all their hits from the seventies to more recent Chain hits such as Spring Hill.

Their new material retains the earthiness of the 70’s while including the insights and musicality expected from a lifetime of experience in the blues genre. These songs feature on their latest album titled ‘Sweet Honey’, and continue the tradition of ‘Oz-Blues’.

Chain live is a great entertainment experience, and with four decades of albums & performances under their belt, it doesn’t get any better than this.

Madder Lake were influenced by British progressive rock acts, Family, Traffic and King Crimson. They were the opening act at the inaugural Sunbury Pop Festival in January 1972. As their popularity increased, they were one of the first band's signed to the Gudinski co-owned Mushroom Records in late 1972. By 1973 they were a headlining act at the 1973 Sunbury Pop Festival and Mushroom Records' first release was their debut single, "Goodbye Lollipop", in February. The single peaked at #15 in Melbourne and made the Australian singles Top 40. Mushroom Record's first album release was the ambitious triple-live, The Great Australian Rock Festival - Sunbury 1973, which was released in early April, and included two Madder Lake tracks. Madder Lake's debut album, Stillpoint followed in August, which peaked at #13 on the Australian albums chart, it spawned their most recognised single, "12lb Toothbrush". More soon...

See Spectrum Rock!

Spectrum's enormous 1971 hit, I’ll Be Gone, (Someday I'll have money) still inspires crowds to sing along all over the country and it was recognised in APRA’s 2001 list of the top Australian songs of the last 75 years. (It came in at No.13).

Spectrum's enormous 1971 hit, I’ll Be Gone, (Someday I'll have money) still inspires crowds to sing along all over the country and it was recognised in APRA’s 2001 list of the top Australian songs of the last 75 years. (It came in at No.13). Artists as diverse as Manfred Mann, John Williamson and Colleen Hewett have recorded versions of I’ll Be Gone, and Spectrum was included on the momentous Long Way to the Top tour that toured the nation in 2002 just to play that one song.

Spectrum and its later incarnations became better known as an album bands and continued to release well-received albums up until the late ‘70s, including Spectrum Part One, Milesago, (both recently re-issued by Aztec Music), The Indelible Murtceps’ Warts Up Your Nose, Ariel’s A Strange Fantastic Dream and Rock & Roll Scars – the latter recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios.

In 1995 Spectrum’s founder members, Mike Rudd and Bill Putt, re-emerged as a duo with the acoustically skewed CD, Living on a Volcano, and shortly afterwards they hooked up with their present drummer, Peter ’Robbo’ Robertson and re-adopted the Spectrum moniker. They’ve produced a couple of Spectrum Plays the Blues albums, Spill and No Thinking, and with the inclusion of keyboardist Daryl Roberts are presently immersed in producing the third in a projected series of four Breathing Space EPs, which is due for release early in the New Year.

But playing live is what Spectrum’s all about. They’ll treat the audience to a guided tour of Spectrum classics, with weird and wonderful songs like What The World Needs Is A New Pair Of Socks, Fly Without Its Wings, The Crab and We Are Indelible, (never forgetting I’ll Be Gone, of course), and then switch seamlessly to the newer Breathing Space material with Rocket Girl, Silicon Valley and Sensible Shoes, songs that slip seamlessly into the Spectrum continuum.

Mike, Bill, Robbo and Daryl are enthusiastically received wherever they play and obviously enjoy what they do as much as their audiences. See and hear them - and be inspired!

BGB played at the last Backroad Festival in October 2008 and are looking forward to their return gig in April 2010.  In September 2009 BGB finally completed their DVD/CD “BGB Live at Musicland” and on released has gained wide exposure and recognition.  Besides a busy playing schedule they have been writing new material and are planning to be in the recording studio again next year to put down these new tracks.  As well as other gigs in & around Melbourne they hold down the house band role at Musicland.

BGB  has been together for a couple of years but the band members have all been in the game 30 years or more. Individually each have a wealth of experience and when it comes to the stage all that experience comes tumbling out in an exciting and energised live performance.  Mick Rohotas (guitar) was in The Gathering, backed Billy Preston, and played in Hercules and Hammaraxx. Ian Logie (bass) and John Longo (drums) are session musicians with many recordings to their name and recently were in Smokehouse with Mick.  Ray Moon (keys) is the newest member of BGB. Ray played with Blackfeather, Hot City Bump Band, Skintight with Lyndsay Hammond and has played in numerous big bands up and down the coast.

Bronnie has no inhibitions at being out front on vocals and with a voice that soars and sweeps up the soul emotions Bronnie, up front gives the band a sizzling edge.  After a stint in Perth playing with performers Steve Tallis, Matt Taylor (Chain), John Meyer (Rose Tattoo), Dirk DuBois  (Chain),  Lindsay Wells to name just a few, Bronnie has acquired many admirers.  Her own Perth band “Bluefire” was headline act at Bindoon Rock Festival (WA) on more than one occasion.  On returning to Melbourne Bronnie released her CD “Hanging Free” and performed with the likes of Geoff Achsion, Dutch Tilders, Phil Manning and Lloyd Speigel before forming the BGB band.

Collectively they are BGB; they play a blend of original blues/soul that will have you asking for more.

See you at the Sunbury BackRoad Festival!!

Melbourne based singer/songwriter and guitarist, Jarrah Thompson seamlessly fuses rock, blues, roots, folk and latin into his own distinctive blend. It’s not everyday you hear a guitar / flute / didgeridoo battle but for Jarrah Thompson, experimenting with new sounds, is what it’s all about. Likened to artists such as Jeff Buckley and Led Zeppelin, it is no wonder Jarrah Thompson has been labeled ‘the next big thing’.

After extensive touring throughout Melbourne, NSW and WA and widespread support from community radio and ABC, Thompson’s music has been turning more than a few heads. In 2008, Jarrah unveiled his explosive nine-piece blues/rock band, earning him a spot at the Point Nepean Music Experience. This awe-inspiring performance, which started with twenty people at his stage, ended with around two thousand punters who had come to hear a flute vs. guitar battle with the intensity and musicality of a Mozart piece! Drawing inspiration from early Santana, Joe Walsh, Jimi Hendrix and Jethro Tull, Thompson’s live performances exude a raw energy reminiscent of the great rock festivals of late 60’s... and the result? The acclaimed debut album, Stargazer, a versatile showcase of well crafted songs from high energy, fuzzed out guitar rock, to finger picking soul with a live orchestra.

Jarrah Thompson struck his first chord at six years of age, he then went on to study Music Performance at the Las Vegas Academy of The Arts (USA). Returning to Melbourne in 2001 saw the birth of rock band ‘147k’ with the guidance of Australian Hall of Fame Inductee, Lobby Loyde. “Those years were where I learned about life and the music business from a great guitar legend”, says Thompson.  In 2006 Jarrah recorded his debut EP, ‘The Crown Jewels’ which went on high rotation with RRR and PBS.

Described as ‘experimental flute / rock blues’, Jarrah Thompson’s music has the power to transcend the listener to a different time, a different place and the best part of it all is... He’s only just getting started.

Jan Preston

Jan Preston’s earliest musical memories were of singalongs at the piano with one Aunt playing boogie/stride piano and another on violin. All the Prestons sang and played some instrument, even if it was only eggbeater or tea chest bass. Jan was born in the South Island of NZ, studied classical piano and singing from an early age, and always loved performing live. After completing a music degree, she joined the infamous Red Mole Theatre troup in Wellington, toured NZ with Spilt Enz, and was musical director for the legendary and enormously popular Red Mole Cabaret shows in Wellington. At this time she was asked by Sam Neil (then a film director) to write music for a documentary he was making, and Jan has been composing for films ever since. In the late 1970’s she moved briefly to New York where she heard many of the great r’nb piano players, came back to NZ and formed the rock/reggae band “Coup D’Etat” who’s song “Doctor I Like Your Medicine” was a no 1 hit., and then moved on to Sydney where she has lived since 1980. Jan is a fulltime composer, songwriter, and piano player who has specialized in mastering the piano boogie tradition, thus becoming known as Australia’s “queen of boogie piano.” She has played many music festivals in Australia, NZ and Europe, composed and performed music for silent films, and continues to write film scores for NZ and Australian drama and documentary. Jan has won 3 Awards for Best Film Score, and 2 for Best Australian Female Blues Artist. Jan has a 17 year old son and her sister, Gaylene, is a well known NZ filmmaker.

Falloe

Falloe is a Melbourne based electric folk/roots band that first formed in January of 2006.

Falloe is a Melbourne based electric folk/roots band that first formed in January of 2006. Over the past 3 years the 5 piece band have been kept busy honing their craft in the alternative clubs & bars of Melbourne’s inner north, as well as the regional towns of Ballarat, Bendigo, Woodend, St Arnaud, Portland and Geelong.

To date the band has released one full length studio album, entitled “The Diamond & the Thief”(2009) and two EPs, entitled “The Ballad of Jimmy James”(2008) and “Dead Dogs”(2008). A music clip entitled “August 8th”, is also available for viewing on youtube.

To celebrate the release of their debut album, “The Diamond & the Thief”, Falloe recently completed a two week tour of Australia’s East Coast. Starting in Melbourne, at the Corner Hotel, the band completed nine shows throughout Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and the ACT.

Falloe’s performance takes you into the hearts and minds of lovers, dreamers, drunkards, demons and everyday no-bodies and no hopers. Their song writing is hinged by friends who clearly have a love of creating music together. Fusing folk, roots, blues & rock with both emotive and spirited results, Falloe construct music that encourages the audience to drink, dance, cry, shimmer or smile. . . . And quite often, all of the above.

The band members and instrumentation include –

Wade F Piva - Lead Vocal, Acoustic Guitar, Tambourine & Melodica

Rennie Paonessa - Guitars, Harmonica, Piano Accordion & Vocals

Neil Tolentino - Bass, Guitar, Washboard & Vocals

Peter Guidera - Drums & Percussion

Rob Murray - Guitars, Keyboards, Piano Accordion & Vocals

As described by freelance writer, Jeff Dowsing

“Falloe is a unique and immediately gratifying fusion of Folk, Roots, Blues & Rock music. A cohesive purity shines through the melting pot of influences, drawn from a diverse array of backgrounds. Their bitter-sweet melodies are complimented by old world themes and absorbing lyrics.”

BenZine’s mix of original songs and covers are definitely on the folk/roots side of rock. The bands diverse nationalities ensures that many influences get blended to form a complex & rich sound that can be enchanting, dream like before pushing into layered harmonies over driving riffs, shifting a gear and snapping the audience back into now.

Scott Hughes     Vocals, guitar, mandolin and alto sax

Joshua Knight     Bass

You gotta have a plan ... ingenuity, the chronicle of musician Rick Steele. A pair of hand crafted boots, the tinted Lennonesque glasses, the trademark voice, the whiskey town harp, the grand canyon repetoire, he's the son of a preacher man dubbed the grandfather of blues . A raconteur who's musical baptism of fire has been a life spent as a purveyor of music. There aren't many musicians left that you can call the real deal - on stage or off stage. Bob Dyaln once said 'a man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do'. Well, if that is the'"modern day poet's' measure of success, then Steele's success is sealed having spent more than four decades doing what he wants to do and what he does best.. bringing music to the people. There's no mistaking it, when Steele takes to the stage there's an undeniable warmth, a familiarity right off the bat . With his own brand of showmanship, he's established himself as an institution.

Tempting Fate started out as Shakedown and played to any audience that would have them, from charity events, local fairs, motor shows and many private functions. They have been able to entertain many crowds of all ages with their great mix of songs, classic covers and their dynamic original material whilst always maintaining professionalism beyond their years.

In June 2008 they were entered into the Hume battle of the bands competition and were very excited when they won the event!  From there they have consistently had regular work playing at some of the best venues in and around Melbourne and have even travelled interstate to be the main act at  two B&S Balls, Loxton SA and Condobolin NSW, where they performed for a crowd of 1,000 people.

2009 saw them change their name to Tempting Fate.

As well as juggling their frequent gigs, school and work commitments they have managed to find the time to record their first EP. The EP contains 6 original songs and is available now.

On Sunday December 13th  2009  Tempting Fate competed in the Melbourne Final of the Emergenza worldwide battle of the bands competition held at Billboard the venue in Melbourne. After many heats and semi finals it was down to just 11 bands in the Melbourne final.  Although they did not win, this event was a great experience for the band and a chance to play along side some great Melbourne acts. They would like to congratulate Kullakall for winning.

Tempting Fate is also very excited to have been asked to play at The Sunbury BackRoad Festival in April next year. They are really looking forward to playing this huge event that will be held in their home town!

Sunbury Divas

Sunbury Divas and the Sons Of Sunbury join forces

The Sunbury Divas were founded by Adam Przewlocki in 2006 with just eight members. Since then they have grown to a current membership of over 60.

In May 2008 the Divas were selected from over 200 choirs to compete as 1 of the top 16 community choirs in Australia on Channel 7/Granada Production’s BATTLE OF THE CHOIRS. Their first song CANDYMAN “raised the bar of excellence, and jumped right over it!” according to celebrity judge and founder of the Choir of Hard Knocks, Jonathon Welch.

With the success of the Divas Adam decided to form an all male Choir and called for all interested men and boys to form The Sons Of Sunbury. Many husbands, fathers and friends of the Divas signed up and the first rehearsal was in August 2008. There are now 32 members in the Sons Of Sunbury.

The Sons first professional performance took place at  Olive Hill Estate in Sunbury in December 2008. They performed for two sellout concerts and drew many a tear and raw emotion from the audience which was quiet amazing after just 13 weeks rehearsals.

The choirs have a rather large repertoire including songs such as The Rose, A Supremes Medley, Kiss From A Rose and Queens Somebody to Love. Now that's just the ladies. The men's song list includes For the Longest Time, Love Potion No. 9, Impossible Dream and Bridge Over Troubled Water

Earlier this year the two Choirs joined together to raise money for the bush fire survivors by putting together a three hour long concert in front of over 300 people. They raised over $5000.

Last August both the choirs competed in the Australian National Choral Eisteddfod in Canberra. The Divas won the Open Popular Section and the Sons placed second. The Sons then went on to place second in the Open Championship Section.

They are now preparing to compete in the World Choir Games in Shaoxing in China in July.

Whilst preparing to compete against the world they continually support Community Events and Festivals by performing whenever and wherever possible.
